Topic > Interpreting Choy and Taylor's tales: problems...

At a time when humans were learning to use spears made of sticks and stones and the fire place was a revolutionary discovery, racist and prejudicial attitudes predominated , which served as a defense mechanism for the human race. The defense mechanism, which helped protect human tribes from the threat of mysterious, unknown intruders with possible intentions to harm the tribes, now causes harm to people of different ethnicities. Such damage is observed in the history of North America when Europeans established settlements on the North American continent. Due to European expansion into the North American continent, the first nations already established on the continent were forced from their homes by Europeans, violating the rights and freedoms of the first nations and targeting them with discrimination; Furthermore, in the history of the United States of America, dark-skinned individuals were used as slaves for manual labor and were deprived of their rights and freedoms by Americans due to the racist attitudes present in America. Although racist and prejudicial attitudes have weakened over the decades, they persist in modern societies. To examine a modern perspective of prejudice and racism, “I'm a Banana and Proud of it” by Wayson Choy and “Pretty Like a White Boy: The Adventures of a Blue-Eye Ojibway” by Drew Hayden Taylor both address the issues of prejudice and racism. racism; however, the authors extend each other's reflections on the issues due to their different definitions, perspectives, experiences, and realities.
