Are gay marriages in Asia seen with the same perspective as in the American context? The history of gay marriage is short but not as popular. From the history of gay marriage it is estimated that there are 250 million people living in places that accept gay marriage; this is approximately 4% of the world population. In 2nd century Rome, men of the same age could legally marry where they were considered pagan and marriages were performed by the Mother Goddess (Celeste 2010). On April 16, 106, the first gay marriage was documented in which two men, Pedro and Vandilaz, were married in a chapel assisted by a priest. In the United States, the majority of Christians are very active in opposing same-sex marriage both vocally and politically. Why is this so? This is contrary to the convective purpose of marriage and marriage is also defined as a union between two people of opposite sex, (Norton, 2004). In Asia, gay marriage enjoys full support from all corners, from religious leaders, to politicians, to gay rights activists. . They argue that gays are families too and need recognition and support. According to Jennifer Lin, an Asian marriage activist, it was important for Asian people to raise visibility and also encourage gay marriage. There is an increase in the visibility of gay people in Asia which is seen as a form of social change and is growing very rapidly due to the high rate of development in Asia. The root of this issue is the fact that Asians do not believe that homosexuality comes from the West and their religious beliefs, marriage rules and cultural taboos are also decreasing.
