Over the years, society has started to evolve and become progressively more efficient as its views and perspectives on various aspects of life have also changed. However, the one aspect of life that remained constant was religion. The impact of a constant religious opinion on a changing society has harmful and beneficial effects on the population of that society. Religion was created in part in an attempt to answer questions that could not be answered any other way; provide an explanation for the inexplicable. Each religion in turn has its own version of a higher being to believe in. Giving this higher being a name or title like “God” implies that he is a person rather than an entity. Bhikhu Parekh (2001) states how “for Gandhi, Truth and cosmic spirit were beyond all qualities, including morality. As he said... "beyond the personal God there is a Formless Essence that our reason cannot comprehend." Although cosmic power was devoid of qualities, including personality, Gandhi argued that humans often found it difficult to avoid personalizing it” (p. 36). This customization makes it easier for people to depend on the entity they believe in for everything. Parekh (2001) further states that Gandhi believed that if “the individual abandoned the illusion of particularity and individuality and became a transparent medium of the cosmic spirit, he would be able to mobilize enormous spiritual energy within himself and exercise great moral and spiritual power.” on his peers” (p. 56). To find peace and become a moral compass one needed to find the peaceful and calm energy said to surround the gods.
