CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW2.1 Study plant: Angelica sinensis2.1.1 DescriptionThe plant sample, botanical name called Angelica sinensis as shown in Figure 2.1, belongs to the Umbelliferae family which is the same some parsley, carrots and celery. A. sinensis has been used for thousands of years traditionally and is commonly known as Dang Gui (Chinese), Dong Quai (English), Toki (Japanese), Tanggwi (Korean), and Kinesisk Kvan (Danish). (Fang et al., 2012). Furthermore, the nicknames of A. sinensis are Female Ginseng or Lady's Ginseng. It can be found in China, Japan and Korea, commonly in damp mountain ravines, river banks and coastal areas. sinensis is a perennial plant with a hollow, grooved stem. (Pizzorno and Murray, 2013). It provides purplish green stem, white petals and a height of 2 m. A. sinensis contains ovate, three-lobed and serrated leaflets. (Wiart, 2012). On the other hand, the root of A. sinensis is cylindrical, light brown in color and bitter in taste and is used as a health food product as a flavoring in alcohol and soft drinks...
