School counselors are licensed educators with a minimum of a master's degree in school counseling, making them qualified to care for all students with academic, career/personal and social life by guiding and evaluating in a school program that promotes the success of every student. You can be an elementary, middle, or high school counselor. I chose this career for my senior year exit project because therapy has been a very important part of my entire life, but I also want to be able to be that person in high school that every student knows they can reach out to for anything. I want to be a mentor and guide kids and help them create the most successful high school career they can have and be present mentally and emotionally as well. To begin your journey to becoming a school counselor you need to gain experience in counseling as early as possible by doing volunteer counseling, field counseling, peer counseling, or teaching. You must have a professional commitment to a school and earn a bachelor's degree in education, sociology, or psychology. Secondary teaching credentials are also a good thing to have on hand because school counselors are primarily employed in secondary, high school, and middle schools. You also need a master's or doctoral degree in educational psychology or child psychology and any required supervised counseling internships and pass any required state or federal certification exams. Many programs focus on developing the skills necessary to help young adults understand the problems they are experiencing in their personal lives and try to work together to find a coping mechanism so they are able to complete school work successfully . The courses cover topics regarding family therapy for cu...... middle of paper ......sion and understanding of each of the students they are assigned to help and requires a personal and also professional relationship of trust. It requires a lot of multi-tasking with advising, personal/social, and academic collages, as well as having to do classroom check-ins and student checks to see how your students are doing in each class and whether they are succeeding in all their abilities. For a typical high school counselor, work hours tend to be 7 to 9 hours Monday through Friday when working traditional high school hours. Each counselor has their own way of approaching everything they do with students because it is a very personal relationship with each individual student. But most of the consultants are closer to the seniors every year because of all the collage advising them during the whole process.
