Manipulation of language can be a weapon of mind control and abuse of power. The story Animal Farm by George Orwell is all about manipulation, and the main way manipulation is used in this novel is the use of words. The character in this book called Squealer employs ethos, pathos, and logos to manipulate other animals and maintain control. The first rhetorical device that Squealer uses to persuade the other animals is ethos. At the beginning of the novel, Squealer explains why the milk was not distributed evenly and why most of it went to the pigs. Squealer supports this idea by highlighting the leadership that pigs play in Animal Farm. Squealer conveys the pigs' authority by saying, “The entire management and organization of this farm depends on us. Day and night we watch over your well-being. It is for your sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples” (Orwell 31). This quote is an example of ethics, because it shows that pigs care for other animals. This shows that pigs have credible reasons for having milk and apples. It's not really true that pigs need all the milk for themselves, so Squealer uses his speaking skills to his advantage, so that he and all the other pigs can enjoy all the milk. This isn't fair to the rest of the animals, but the animals trust that the pigs know how to handle things on the farm, so they accept it as a valid reason for their greed. Later in the novel, Squealer states that Napoleon is a suitable leader for Animal Farm and explains that Snowball is a traitor. Squealer supports this idea by comparing Snowball to Napoleon. The animals were confused as to why Snowball was kicked off the farm. One of the animals... middle of paper... making mistakes. Using logic to make the animals question their decisions they may make in the future, Squealer manipulates the animals to gain power over the farm, using logos effectively. In both of these examples, Squealer uses false information that makes sense to the animals to convince them to get what he and the other pigs wanted. By saying all this, Clarinet was using logos effectively. Squealer clearly has effective speaking skills, as he employs ethos, pathos, and logos in his speeches to make them more convincing. By using these rhetorical devices, Squealer manages to gain power over the other animals on the farm, even as his words were used as a weapon to abuse his authority. Squealer demonstrates that using ethos, pathos, and logos effectively is the key to success, regardless of whether success is good or bad for others..
