Topic > Effects of Peer Pressure on Academic Performance

The topic that will be studied is peer pressure and its influence on academic performance. Every person has cliques, groups and friends by which they are influenced and this is known as peer pressure. This topic brings together peer pressure and influence received from peers and studies the positive and/or negative effects it may have on a student's academic performance. The hypotheses investigated in this research topic are: if the student is susceptible to peer pressure, his academic performance will suffer; if the student is susceptible to positive peer pressure, his or her academic performance will be positively affected; if the student is susceptible to negative peer pressure, his or her academic performance will be negatively affected. Here are some insights into previous findings/results. Aziz, Akhtar, and Hassan (2011) studied peer and parental pressure on Pakistani youth. The study focused on both peer and parental pressure and made a gender comparison to determine which pressure is stronger. There are many factors such as age, culture, and gender that influence the amount of influence imposed by peer or parental pressure. A questionnaire, consisting of a three-point Lickert-type rating scale, was developed by the researchers and was administered to 100 male and 100 female students enrolled in the first semester of different master's programs in universities in Islamabad. The variables investigated were gender differences in peer and parental pressure on new students. The results show that there is no significant difference in peer pressure. However, male students experience more pressure from parents than females due to the social situation, where males need... middle of paper... group acceptance did not have a direct influence on academic performance. However, it has been established that at least one of the school-related attitude and behavior variables has a direct and positive effect on academic performance. Therefore, it can be concluded that peer group acceptance has an indirect influence, through school-related attitudes and behaviors, on academic performance. This is especially important for women's performance because they place more importance on friendships. Peer group acceptance had the greatest influence on academic performance while avoiding problems at school. These findings are limited to only adolescents who were "at risk" for academic failure, further research needs to be conducted to determine the relationship between peer group acceptance and the academic performance of students who are not "at risk"".".
