Bullying on the rise Bullying comes in many forms, from teasing to harassment to physical aspects. When people talk about bullying, it seems to be swept under the rug, as if it's no big deal. However, bullying is an epidemic. I believe the main reason a child, or an adult, is bullied has to do with being different. I think bullying starts too early in kids these days. I think there is a difference between harmless teasing and bullying, but harmless teasing can turn into bullying in the blink of an eye. When I was growing up, I was bullied, but not until the third or fourth grade. I was bullied because I came from nothing or because of the differences between my siblings. I was skinny, with stringy, dirty hair, torn clothes that didn't match, shoes with holes that didn't fit, “welfare rubbish” is what they called me. We bring awareness to the signs of bullying. We pay close attention to our children's behavior and ask questions if it changes. We address the problem as soon as we notice it. Many children commit suicide because of bullying and it is not necessary. I observe my children's behavior, ask questions and get answers. I know my children's teachers very well because I always go through behavioral changes with the teachers to make sure I don't miss signs of bullying or being a bully. If we work together, know the signs and take action, we can prevent bullying on both sides and get children enjoying school again.
