Assessment of learning can be a significant tool for teachers and students in a course to provide feedback to the student about the type and quality of work being completed in the course and to the instructor to identify areas in which the student has difficulty and then it is possible to provide additional materials or modify the course. The purpose of this article is to define assessment and critical thinking skills, then review a state university course and suggest several assessments that could be used to demonstrate learning. Theoretical Foundations of Nursing will be the revisited course, as it is the only one I have taken previously, and therefore the only one I will have evaluated against the curriculum. Critical thinking is recognized by accrediting bodies as an achievement for bachelor's and master's graduates. level programs, but there is no consensus on its definition and measurement (Ali, Bantz, & Siktberg, 2005, p. 90). Some “descriptors” of critical thinking are: trust, contextual perspective, flexibility, curiosity, intellectual integrity, intuition, open-mindedness, perseverance and reflection. Furthermore, individuals who think critically have the ability to use the cognitive abilities to analyze, apply standards, discriminate, search for information, reason logically, and transform knowledge (Scheffer & Rubenfeld, 2000) (Ali, Bantz, & Siktberg, 2005 , p. 90). Assessment strategies should be integrated into the curriculum so that critical thinking skills can be assessed throughout the course and not just at the end of the course.
