The dictator, Joseph Stalin, ruled Russia from 1929 to 1953 (2014), according to the History Channel. During his time as dictator, Stalin devised a significant plan to help Russia expand. This plan was called the Five Year Plan. The goal of Stalin's five-year plan was to quickly industrialize the nation so it could catch up with the West (Shmoop editorial team). Stalin also decided to collectivise agriculture, which meant he thought he could get peasants to produce more crops by moving them from their individual farms to large-scale mechanical enterprises (Shmoop Editorial Team).
