It is also known as dissociative amnesia. It is a disorder that occurs after a traumatic event. The person going through this type of amnesia is blocking the painful event from his or her head. The person with this disorder goes through severe depression and suddenly loses who they are or where they are, which lasts from a few hours to a few days. They are able to form new memories. There are a number of symptoms for an amnestic disorder. There are also differences in the severity of symptoms. Remembering something that just happened would be the main symptom. Some memory leaks can last longer than others. This is shown throughout the film as Leonard struggles to remember the people he just met. Some people with an amnestic disorder will not agree with everyone about their memory loss, that there is nothing wrong with their memory, but Leonard told people he just met that he had a memory problem. There is no real cure for amnestic disorder. But the person can undergo therapy. Some things can speed up the speed at which memory is recalled.
