Garamond's typefaces marked the end of medieval design aesthetics in most of Europe. Baskerville's characters embodied the scientific ideals of the Enlightenment. Together, these two men connect all the major innovations in typography since Gutenberg's letterpress printing. Even though their eras were driven by wildly contrasting philosophical ideologies, they had one very important thing in common. Both had a desire to elevate the art of typographic form to high art. The fact that their work is still relevant today clearly demonstrates that they achieved this goal
