After completing my first aid course, I learned many things that I could put into practice if I ever encounter a life or death situation. I have learned that the first thing to do before performing CPR on an unconscious person is check, call and treat. First of all I have to check the dangers. Next, I have to touch the person's shoulders and call them as well as check for any signs of breathing. If the person suddenly takes a breath, this does not mean that he is conscious; in fact this is a sign of cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest means that the heart has stopped beating; therefore it cannot pump blood to the rest of the body. I need to call 911 immediately. If I don't have my phone with me, I need to call someone else for help. For example, if I see a person wearing a blue shirt, I have to speak boldly: “Hey you, in blue! There is an unconscious person lying on the ground. Call 911 immediately and call me back!” Even though I know help is on the way, I still need to perform CPR.
