Topic > Photo ID Legislation - 1590

Recently several states have passed laws requiring photo identification at polling places. Thirty-four states have currently passed photo identification legislation. There are two forms of photo identification, non-rigorous and rigorous. Strict photo identification is when voters who do not have proper photo ID at the polls must show their correct identification at a different time in order for their provisional ballot to be counted. Lax photo identification occurs when voters who do not have adequate photo identification at the polls cast a provisional ballot that would be counted in a close election without the voter having to perform additional tasks. Controversy surrounds photo identification legislation laws. There are two main sides to this legislation, those who approve photo identification and those who do not. Support for photo identification is a viewpoint surrounding the controversy over photo identification legislation. There are several reasons to support photo identification legislation. The main reason for support is that photo identification would prevent voter fraud. On election day, there are many cases of people posing as someone else to vote again. This is a crime, but cases of voter fraud are still being reported. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, “advocates see increased identification requirements as a way to prevent voter impersonation and increase public confidence in the electoral process” (Underhill, 2014, para. 4). In other words, photo identification at the polls would dramatically reduce voter fraud and help increase the security of the democratic system.
