Attributes that have influenced Western CivilizationThere have been great influences from ancient civilizations that have helped the development of our Western civilization today. Two great civilizations that perhaps contributed the most to our civilization are ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. Some of their contributions to today's world include farming, sailing, navigation, and the use of the calendar. The first and perhaps the most important attribute that comes from ancient civilizations is the art of agriculture. The ancient Mesopotamians are credited with inventing agriculture. In our civilization today, agriculture is fundamental to the survival of all humanity. (Roberts, p.48-50) Due to overpopulation and increased housing and development, there are no natural areas for people to gather, so agriculture is essential. Without the development of agriculture the population of the United States and the world would starve. Not only did the Mesopotamians develop agriculture, but they were also able to use engineering to make agriculture work. For example, the Mesopotamians developed dams and cisterns that they used for irrigation. Irrigation still plays a significant role in agriculture today. (Roberts, p.48-50) Another attribute that has influenced the development of Western civilizations is that of sailing and navigation.
