“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself” This quote relates to the stories for a few reasons. The first reason is that, if Ivan had not been so scared and rational in his actions, perhaps he would not have died. The second reason is that if Billy Weaver had realized his mistake and fearlessly taken control of the situation, his fate would have turned out differently. “The Path Through The Cemetery” is about a shy man named Ivan who overcomes his fear, at the expense of his life. The second story “The Landlady” is about a young man who falls into the clutches of an evil woman, who later in the story will be responsible for his death. In one of the stories the author uses fear to teach us that if you don't face your fears, they can consume you. While in the other story, the author used fear to ignite warning signals in the reader's mind. One way that the story “The Path Through the Graveyard” by Leonard Q. Ross reveals that being afraid can consume you is shown in the character Ivan. For example, in the story Ivan was terrified of walking through the cemetery even though it would save him time. This is shown when the lieutenant turns to Ivan and says: “You are a pigeon Ivan. You will walk all over the cemetery in this cold, but you won't dare cross it. Another example of Ivan showing fear is when he was walking through the cemetery and thought something had grabbed him. “The wind was cruel and the saber was like ice in his hands. Ivan trembled under his long, thick coat and began to run with a limp. He recognized the large tomb. He must have sobbed – that was the sound drowned out by the wind... Ivan started to get up from his knees. But he couldn't move. Something was holding him back. Something grabbed him in an inflexible and im... middle of paper... differently in each of the stories. For example, in “The Path Through the Cemetery” Ivan dies because he was deathly afraid of walking through the cemetery, but he did it anyway out of defiance. But in “The Landlady” Billy Weaver dies because he didn't fear the landlady and completely ignored his instincts that there might be something strange about her. Fear is used in different ways in both stories. In “The Path Through the Cemetery” the author taught us the dangers of what can happen when you let fear take control of your life. In the other story, “The Landlady,” the author created a sense of fear in the reader because the main character didn't feel it. Both authors use fear to teach an important lesson in their stories. Leonard Q. Ross taught readers to face their fears and Roald Dahl taught us to pay attention to our surroundings.
