Topic > The pros and cons of complementary and alternative therapies...

First of all, most forms of CAM have failed clinical trials as they are dangerous, ineffective and some even capable of causing death in particular cases . Secondly, plant products such as opium poppy and digital violet helped to cure cough and edema, respectively, while destroying the human body due to the content of active toxic components. Furthermore, CAM relies on anecdotes received through word of mouth or published in publicly read books. It cannot be completely trusted, because it has not been tested or has failed in formal clinical trials. One cannot be sure of the effectiveness of alternative medicine, as in the case of PC-SPES, which despite containing large amounts of estrogen is still sold to prostate cancer patients today. Ultimately, the research revealed that annual spending on CAM was higher than that on conventional medicine in the UK and US. In contrast, modern medicine is scientifically proven and provides only those treatments that have passed clinical trials. The treatments are published only in peer-reviewed journals and are not heralded as a cure, but are suggested as a possible treatment. Conventional medicine can be trusted to show real treatment. The most significant benefit of conventional healthcare is the increase in people's life expectancy due to medical advances. Additionally, diseases for which there was no cure in the past, such as childhood leukemia, heart disease, and most forms of asthma, can now be cured. Therefore there should be no alternatives to modern medicine, because its advantages are obvious, while there is still discussion about non-conventional medicine. Some forms of CAM could be used as a complement to conventional medicine, but not as an alternative to it. People should be more informed about CAM and its inefficiency in providing effective and safe healthcare like modern medicine
