In 1991 the Somali Civil War began. Today, over 500,000 people have been killed by the ongoing conflict in this African country. Many wonder about the different things that happen in a civil war, such as why it happened, but now is the time when the world needs to worry about how this war affects the people who live in this country. To understand what these people are going through, we must first understand this conflict and why it hasn't stopped. There are many other ways in which this civil war has affected the people of Somalia; the economy, healthcare, family life and education are all affected by this ongoing conflict. The Somali civil war is a war that began in 1991, to understand how the war is affecting the population of this country; we must first understand how this war began. In the period between 1986 and 1991, the fall of the Barre regime began. In 1986, the ruler of Somalia's socialist government, Barre was involved in a car accident that left him unable to lead the country; which left responsibility for Somalia to the vice president. Barre was soon elected, and to maintain his power, his supreme revolutionary council became authoritarian and pushed the limits of its power, which then caused the people to become undisciplined towards increasing power. The year before the government was overthrown, the new president and 100 other politicians signed a manifesto supporting reconciliation. In January 1991, the Barre regime was overthrown by rebels protesting against Barre's growing power and the abuses he was imploding across the country by bombing rebel areas. After the fall of the government in 1991, many groups that sought to help overthrow it remained... middle of paper... people of Somalia. One of them is history and how a growing power struggle can affect the entire population. Furthermore, the economy suffers from a lack of jobs and exports from the country, forcing many people to live in poverty and more than half of the population to need immediate food aid. Healthcare in Somalia lacks the resources to be successful in treating people with diseases that affect the country's entire population. Terrorist groups make life difficult in Somalia because there is constant fighting between groups fighting for power and movements of civilians to escape the conflict. 500,000 people should not die from the civil war in Somalia. Maybe one day this war will end, but until then, all we can do is hold out hope that they will overcome this horrible time in their history and rebuild to become great once again..
