Topic > The Most Useless Revolution: The French Revolution

The French Revolution began in the year 1789 and ended in the year 1799. The war took place in French territory, including Paris. Politics and the Enlightenment led to civil war in France. People began to rebel against the ideas of absolute monarchy, systems of government and leadership. The French people wanted freedom and equality. The social structure and economy were important factors in why the revolution began. The social structure passed through the real estate system, considered highly unfair by the lower classes. The estate system depended on how rich you were, meaning the first was the richest, i.e. the king and queen, the second was the nobles and the third was the peasants. The economy was bad and the people were poor. Napoleon Bonaparte, King Louis XVI, Robespierre and Jacques-Pierre Brissot were the most important people involved in this revolution. People argue about the effects of the French Revolution, but I, for one, don't think it was very revolutionary because of Napoleon's actions, the unnecessary deaths, and the social structure. "The Red Necklace" by Sally Gardner, discusses the main points of the revolution. Napoleon Bonaparte was a French emperor who came to power after the French Revolution. Bonaparte reformed religion, social issues and laws. He started the Napoleonic Wars from 1803 to 1815. During these years he tried to conquer the world, taking lands, money and lives. In 1814 he was defeated by the English, which led to the restoration of all land, money and life. In "The Red Necklace", Yann converses with Charles Cordell about the higher powers of France and what he thinks. “So if you have no alliance with king or country, what do you care?” “What does it mean to be human?”, in the middle of the paper, Gardner writes, “Now that the National Assembly has collectively lost its mind and agreed to approve this ridiculous Declaration of the Rights of Man, it felt it was its duty to organize one of its spectacular parties, to remember, if there was any need, how absurd this revolution was. In fact, the idea that all men were equal was ridiculous; no one in their right mind could believe it. According to him, the sooner the population was crushed, the better." The National Assembly is directly separated from history. “The Red Necklace” explained real historical events. These are the reasons why I think the revolution was not revolutionary. It is clear that the French Revolution was not necessary. Nothing good came out of the revolution as a revolution is intended to do. In “The Red Necklace” by Sally Gardner she explains and includes these reasons for the revolution in the book that supports my opinion.
