Women were expected to be polite, proper and obedient. When men wanted their wives and daughters to stay at home, women had no choice but to cooperate, “The growing separation between the workplace and the home has sharpened distinctions between the social roles of men and women. women” (Brinkley 240). As the separation between home and workplace began to grow, shifting gender roles became more evident in society.
