Who is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is a person and is one of three in the trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is the active person who came to reside in the followers of Jesus Christ after Jesus was crucified on the cross and rose from the dead. This is set forth in the prophetic words of the Acts of the Bible, particularly during Peter's sermon at Pentecost in Acts 2:17, where it speaks of God pouring out his Spirit on all people and them learning through God to prophesy. Prophecy is one of the most active gifts among God's followers. When God proclaims not only that His people will prophesy, but that they will be filled with the Spirit, it shows that the Spirit is an active, living person. According to 1 Timothy 4:1, He speaks: “Now the Spirit expressly says that hereafter some bonds will turn away from the faith by giving themselves over to deceiving spirits and teachings of demons.” This verse is a prophetic word spoken by the Holy Spirit, which is also a characteristic of people who prophesy. The fact that the Holy Spirit is able to speak makes Him recognizable so that we can be in communication with Him. He also intercedes on behalf of the weak and powerless people. When we are not sure what to pray for, or are unable to pray as we should, the Spirit intercedes on our behalf with a pain and groaning so deep that words cannot be spoken (Romans 8:26). We need the Spirit to pray for us in times of need, because most of the time we don't pray for the right things. Through His intercession, we can also draw closer to God by trusting the Spirit to pray on our behalf. The Bible also says that He testifies and bears witness concerning Jesus, speaking only truth and life (John 15:26). As followers of Christ we are also called to bear witness to Jesus and to pass on life to others. Since the Spirit also witnesses, it creates a connection between us so that we can let the Spirit flow through us. With the Spirit flowing within us, we are able to have confidence in testifying
