This process is known as bioremediation. Bioremediation involves different types of microbes, known as consortia, that decompose and mineralize substances. All organisms participate directly in recycling, but only some categories of microorganisms possess the metabolic pathways to convert inorganic compounds from one nutritional form to another. Bioremediation works simply by bacteria feeding on the contamination, taking nourishment for growth and reproduction of complex chemical reactions, but the result of this natural process is that the contaminants are completely used or converted into a harmless product such as water and dioxide carbonic. . The microbes will survive and live off their contaminating food source until the unwanted pollutant is eliminated. Organic contaminants susceptible to biodegradation include oil, carbon, pesticides, and some explosives. Factors affecting bioremediation are extreme temperatures, low dissolved oxygen, and low nutrient concentrations. Microbes are a lot like us, they need a comfortable environment to excel. Different microbes prefer different environments. Some like it hot, while others like it cold.
