People in society strive to find happiness in themselves, others, and their community. What factors are there to achieve ultimate happiness in your life? What ethical decisions must be overcome to achieve this supreme happiness to which every individual aspires? The citizens of Omelas have difficulty achieving the goal of making the right ethical decision. In exchange for their happiness and success, there is the misery of a child. To live their “perfect” life, the citizens of Omelas must accept the child's suffering. Making the right ethical decision is difficult, but necessary to end injustice in society. The inability to overcome ethical issues in the city of Omelas is shown through three different characters in the story. There are those who choose to ignore the situation, those who observe the child in misery and those who feel they have to leave. In the story “Those Who Walk Away from Omelas” the characters fail to overcome the ethical issues in their society, and the reader is taught the importance of moral responsibility and the implications of the difficult task of making the right ethical decision. Those who turn away from Omelas” those who choose to ignore and be ignorant are guilty of failing to make the correct ethical decision in Omelas society. Every citizen of Omelas is expected to know that there is a child in poverty for the happiness of the people. Those who “are content simply to know that it is there” (Le Guin 971) are those who specifically choose to ignore the problem and are content to live their happy, perfect life knowing that a child is unhappy in exchange for their happiness. There is a perception that not trying to think about me... middle of paper... is a bigger and more difficult step that not many citizens of the world today are willing to take. Losing the happiness that comes in exchange for injustice in the world is an unthinkable action for humanity. It is necessary to make the right ethical decision to solve the problem completely, but making that right ethical decision is impossible with the other factors of life such as personal happiness. In “He Who Walks Away from Omelas” the reader is taught the importance of making the right ethical decision and can relate these morals to their own community. You cannot simply choose to ignore, you cannot simply choose to observe and yet do nothing, and you cannot simply walk away. The reader is taught the important moral of not being a bystander, the importance of moral responsibility, and the great significance of learning to overcome ethical issues in society..
