All over the world and in societies many children use technology; children use it in a variety of ways including listening to music, watching television and social media. Although social media, defined as websites and applications that allow users to create and share content or participate in social networks (Oxforddictionaries.com, 2014), is a useful tool, it also has hidden effects on children's mental health, defined as a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her capabilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community (Hunter Institute of Mental Health, 2010 ). Children's mental health is affected in several ways; cyberbullying and body image are a couple of examples. As social media usage is on the rise, it is important to understand that it has both positive and negative aspects. Positive aspects include: academic achievement, play and social interactions. Downsides include: cyberbullying and privacy concerns. Furthermore, it is also important to understand what parents want in their children's education regarding cybersecurity and also what implications the use of social media has on teachers. Therefore, children's use of social media is increasing rapidly; there are positives and negatives to using social media, the impact of social media on children's mental health, what parents want their children to know about cybersecurity, and the implications for teachers. In today's society our children have access to a wider range of technologies including social media at a young age. Today's children are called 'digital natives', according to Prensky, 2001.
