Pam is a lesbian firefighter working in Pittsburgh; she is very good at her job but failed to get a promotion. She has also been a victim of harassment from male firefighters at her station who often tease and tease her, such as jumping on her while she is in the shower. She is afraid that her gender and sexuality may prevent her from achieving success in her career. Unfortunately, many women and homosexuals face these types of situations in the workplace and in the article “Sexuality in Organizations” the authors Patricia Yancey Martin and David L. Collision discuss how gender and sexuality can influence our work environment, the because many women and homosexuals suffer discrimination. in the workplace and how we can create a positive environment for all employees. In this article I will summarize their findings and add my own thoughts and opinions. The authors begin the article by stating that sexuality has no business in the workplace, yet many employees ignore this notion (Martin1) The authors go on to say that your gender and sexual preferences play an important role in the workplace and that there is a lot of pressure for men and women to present themselves as heterosexual to avoid questions and gossip from colleagues (Martin1). Many men and women tend to show photos of their family in their work environment, which according to the author is a way to show their heterosexuality, while many homosexual employees do not show photos of their loved ones for fear of revealing themselves as homosexual or doing something else . uncomfortable employees (Martin 2). They then state that if an employee is suspected of being homosexual he could suffer discrimination from both the employer and the employees (Martin 1). The author......middle of the article......andIn conclusion, I found that I agreed with much of what Martin and Collinson. I was shocked to see that there is still this type of discrimination in organizations. I think it's appalling that in this day and age people who work there still face such discrimination simply because of their sexuality and gender. There is no reason why a woman or a homosexual should be treated differently from a man. If I found out that my mother, who is a single mother, was getting less pay because she was a woman, I would be angry. I really hope these companies start taking this topic seriously and take a hard look at how they treat their employees and start cracking down on workplace harassment, otherwise they would face serious consequences. America is known as the land of opportunity and freedom, and maybe it's time we showed it.
