Directed by Rob Reiner, When Harry Met Sally (1989), begins with Harry Burns and Sally Albright, two University of Chicago graduates, setting off for the their post-graduation life in New York. During the journey they both discuss various things, relating to themselves and to men and women in general. As they drive they conclude that “men and women cannot just be friends” (Scheinman & Reiner, 1989) and soon they part ways. They meet again a few years later on a plane, where they discuss Sally's month-long affair with Joe and Harry's impending marriage to Helen. Six years later, they meet again, this time in a bookshop, where it is revealed that Sally and Joe have broken up, as have Harry and Helen, who are now divorced. They soon form a friendship and go through a roller coaster of emotions trying to understand their feelings. Finally, during a New Year's Eve party, they reveal their love for each other. This article will analyze the relationship between Harry and Sally, focusing on normative attachment, while considering individual differences that play a role in their relationship. The article will further explain how their relationship can be analyzed using themes such as conflict, support, and capitalization. Like many other relationships, Harry and Sally become friends at first and as their relationship progresses they change from friends to lovers. Over the course of the film we can see that Harry and Sally's attachment to each other steadily grows. At first they have an initial attraction (Cobb, 2014a) for each other, then, as they meet frequently, they have an established relationship as acquaintances, finally, when they have been friends for a while, they form a long-term relationship term that slowly transitions from friends to intimate partners....... middle of paper ......imon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC.Cobb.
