A young girl named Paikea once said: “In the old days, the earth felt a great void. He was waiting. Waiting to be filled. Waiting for someone to love him. Waiting for a leader” (Whale Rider). According to Paikea, a leader is a guide, someone who leads his people in the right direction, someone who does everything he can to improve his land. In the eyes of Antigone, princess of Thebes, the leader's rules seem right only when he feels that they do not contradict the rules of the gods. On the contrary, Paikea believes that she is different, and that the domain of the gods is different for her, she is an exception. Although they are both very defiant human beings, the tradition of the Greeks, in which Antigone believes, and that of the New Zealanders in which Paikea believes, differ greatly. However, their culture's discrimination against women appears to be comparable. Although the views on tradition, gender, and challenge are similar for Paikea and Antigone, the differences between them are striking. Tradition is the transmission of statements, beliefs, legends, customs and information from generation to generation, especially through word of mouth. or from practice. In the Whale Rider films, the New Zealand tradition is to worship whales. In other words, their “god” is the whale. Their form of prayer was performed through various types of dances along with singing. Paikea was the first son of Porourangi, son of their leader, Koro. In their tradition it is said that the first male child of the male leader will become the next leader and will be called Paikea as he will be their prophet. Porourangi opposed this when he had his daughter. After much controversy, the leader of the time, Koro, was at the top...middle of the card...the "wisest of the wise" or the "greatest of the great", there is always room for improvement. Antigone and Paikea's views on what a leader is lead them to have different, but similar, views about their tradition, how they have been affected by gender discrimination, and the kind of role that challenge has played in their lives. Even today, gender discrimination is still present and for this reason men are paid more than women in some fields. Differences in cultural traditions lead its followers to have different personality traits than people of other cultures. Many things play a role in what happens next, but how you approach each situation and the strategies you use will tell you whether or not the odds are in your favor. “What affects one directly affects everyone indirectly.
