Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the miserable refuse of your teeming shore. Send me these, the homeless, storm-tossed, I raise my lamp beside the golden door! --- Emma LazarusThese immortal words are engraved on a brass plaque attached to the base of the Statue of Liberty, placed there in 1903 at the height of immigration to our country. Lady Liberty is identified in Lazarus' poem The New Colossus as "the mother of all exiles" whose beacon hand is wide open to light the way to welcome immigrants. This poem was written by a Jewish-American woman in support of immigration, in a country founded by immigrants (American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise, 2014). Over one hundred years ago, Mrs. Lazarus expressed her belief that America was a safe place for all suffering people in the world. No one who has ever stood in New York Harbor, as the wind whipped past his face, and gazed upon the patina of Frederic Auguste Bartholdi's greatest work, can deny the overwhelming awe inspired by this extraordinary statue. The yearning for Freedom is a tangible force in the presence of this Great Lady. Today our country is embroiled in an immigration controversy unprecedented in history. A political battle rages as immigrants who have been in our country, often for years or even decades, are deported. Unfortunately, the children they raised while in this country are left orphaned or deported with their parents, forced to leave the only life they have ever known. However, very often the parents of these children prefer to abandon their children to a solitary life in America, rather than condemn them to the existence they fled in their home countries.
