When reading the story “Soldiers Home” by Ernest Hemingway, some general questions may arise. A question that could be immediately accumulated while reading the story is; What effect did the war have on Krebs? This is relevant because there are many instances where Krebs shows that he is actually a changed man now that he has returned from the war. It's interesting because it gives us a realistic view of what soldiers might experience when they return home. In “Soldiers Home” the war influenced Krebs' personality and his emotions. He is a different man now because of the war. I demonstrated this by showing textual evidence of Krebs' personality and emotions before the war, how his personality changed, and how Krebs' emotions changed. Krebs is shown as a different person in the beginning compared to the latter parts of "Soldiers Home". . In the first sentence of the story it says, “Krebs went to war for a Methodist college in Kansas” (87). Everyone who goes to college is looking for a future. There is a line that says, “There is a photo showing him among his fraternity brothers, all wearing exactly the same height and collar style” (87). This excerpt from “The Soldier's Home” insists that Krebs once had a social life. Being in a fraternity also requires a lot of involvement within your community. The picture also shows that Krebs has many friends. At the beginning of the story Krebs is described as what you might call a complicated man. He attends a college, a fraternity and also has many friends. Another aspect described by the first sentence of the story is that he attends a Methodist college (87). Krebs attending a Methodist college proves to be a religious man... at the center of the card... love and affection. Basically the army taught him that love is not a necessity. This sentence shows that Krebs does not have many emotions. Krebs also speaks to his sister very sarcastically and without emotion: “'Am I really your girlfriend?' 'Of course', 'Do you love me?' ,'Uh, huh.'” (91). In this sentence Krebs shows a lack of concern for his sister's feelings. Krebs' emotions were affected by the war. Returning home after a war is difficult for some people. In this story Krebs makes it difficult for himself to return home. Being away for so long made him grow wary and changed his customs. He had this standard of living and social life. Now that he has returned home he has become the exact opposite. This shows that Krebs' personality and emotions have changed. This change in Krebs is significant to the story because it shows how war can affect a soldier.
