Euclid and Archimedes are two of the most important scientists and mathematicians of all time. Their results and discoveries play a fundamental role in mathematics and science today. Many of the basic principles and core subjects of mathematics, physics, engineering, invention, and astronomy derive from the innovations, inventions, and discoveries made by both Euclid and Archimedes. Euclid, who lived from about 330 BC to 260 BC, is often called the father of geometry. Very little is known about his life or exact place of birth, other than that he taught mathematics at the Library of Alexandria in Alexandria, Egypt during the reign of Ptolemy I. He also wrote many books based on mathematical knowledge, such as Elements, which it is considered one of the greatest mathematical/geometric encyclopedias of all time, surpassed only by the Bible. Euclid also developed a series of axioms and proofs, which he called "postulates". Some of these postulates refer to all sciences, while others refer only to geometry. An example of a Euclidean postulate that applies to all sciences is “The whole is greater than the part”. An example of a Euclidean postulate relating only to geometry is “You can draw a straight line between any two points.” Although these postulates seem extremely simple and obvious to us, Euclid was the first person to state them, as well as prove their truth without a doubt. These simple postulates really help with more complicated math and science, like advanced geometry. For example, when doing advanced geometry involving many lines and shapes, it is extremely helpful to know for sure that any single line can never contain more than one parallel line.Euc......half of the paper.... . .the most important scientists in history. Both are said to have shaped the science and mathematics we use and study today. Euclid's postulates and Archimedes' calculus are both fundamental and important tools in mathematics, while discoveries, such as Archimedes' method of using water to measure the volume of an irregularly shaped object, have helped shape all physical principles and science today. It is for these reasons that they are remembered for their contributions to the world of mathematics and science today, and will continue to be remembered for years to come.
