Topic > Kurt Donald Cobain - 903

Kurt Donald Cobain was born on February 20, 1976 in Hoquaim, a small town southwest of Seattle. When he was about six months old he moved to Arberdeen and spent most of his childhood there. His parents divorced when he was seven. Cobain didn't handle the divorce well. Cobain said he never felt loved or safe again (Ronson, 1996). He became antisocial and retired after the divorce. Cobain passed through several relatives and at one point even lived under a bridge. After Cobain's parents divorced, he lived with his mother in a trailer park for a year. Cobain then lived with his father in Montesano. His father got him involved in sports. Cobain intentionally misbehaved while playing sports to get back at his father. Cobain decided to learn to play the guitar instead of playing sports. He enjoyed reading and other artistic activities. Cobain's interests made him a target for bullies. (Wilson, 1996)Cobain was a sickly child. “As a child he suffered from chronic bronchitis and scoliosis and, by the age of seven, was prescribed both Ritalin and sedatives to enable him to sleep” (Headlam, 1996). Cobain complained of heartburn that prevented him from attending gymnastics classes. In 1985 Cobain founded the band Nirvana. The band went through several changes before finally becoming Nirvana. In 1987 the band played in several locations. In 1988 the band got their first recording contract. Cobain's music complemented the grunge sound. Nirvana very quickly grew into stars. “Nirvana was, for a short time, the most popular band in the world largely because of the cult of personality that grew around Cobain” (Headlam, 1996). After Nirvana released the album Nevermind, Cobain married Courtney Love. “Love shared Cobain's penchant for self-destruction, but not his ambivalence about fame. Together they began a drug wave that led Cobain to near death a few times and Love to take heroin while pregnant” (Headlam, 1996). Cobain claimed that the birth of his daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, had made him a different man. He claimed to be a loving father and husband. However, drug use is believed to have continued. “On March 5, 1994, Cobain was rushed to hospital in a coma after a failed suicide attempt in which he washed down about fifty painkillers with champagne” (Ronson, 1996). The attempt was not made known to many people.
