The therapeutic relationship is a fundamental component of the nursing profession. Without therapeutic relationships it will never be possible to provide the best possible care. The foundation on which trust is built is created by the nurse's ability to truly listen and respond appropriately. Listening creates the basis for developing a strong and trusting relationship. Sometimes it is simply listening to what a patient says that makes the difference, allowing the patient to open up and feel more comfortable with the nurse (Hawkins-Walsh, 2000). The structure for creating a therapeutic relationship is built on the nurse's ability to show empathy towards the client. Empathy is the ability to put yourself in the patient's shoes, to feel the same things as the patient and to explore what it means for them (RNAO, 2002).
