On January 20, 2009, President Obama was officially inaugurated and sworn in as the forty-fourth president of the United States of America. Inauguration tradition involves the president giving a speech about the goals he wants to achieve during his presidency. The president must give a speech that appeals to the public while being professional. Rhetoric is a useful strategy to use in speech production. Obama uses rhetoric to be able to present his message of creating hope and change together in America, while solving the economic and social challenges and issues left by the previous president. Barack Obama uses syntax, rhetorical triangle, and diction to portray his message. An important tool of rhetorical syntax used by Obama is parallelism. Obama uses word repetition to introduce sentences or uses them to begin clauses of sentences. The repetition of a phrase before each clause is called anaphora. In one of his paragraphs, Obama repeats the word “to” to bring a parallel structure. When he says “The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; choose our best story; carrying forward that precious gift” is making himself seem powerful and influential (Barack Obama Inaugural Address 1). He explains his wishes for the country in an easy to understand and influential list. Another place where he repeats his words is towards the end of the speech when he proclaims “This is the price and the promise of citizenship… This is the source of our trust… This is the meaning of our freedom and our belief…” ( Barack Obama's Inaugural Speech 4). By repeating the phrase “this is the,” Obama makes the following statements important. Obama had previously talked about how we're priced at... half the paper... the speech strikes a hopeful but also slightly desperate tone. In a November 4, 2008 quote from Barack Obama, he says: "That is the true genius of America: America can change. Our union can be perfected. And what we have already accomplished gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.” Obama's inauguration speech reflects the ideas expressed by that quote. Barack Obama's message in his speech is that through hope and change we can lead the country out of recession, turmoil and any difficult task that faces it. we will have before us.What we have achieved proves that we can do it again, and the only reason these feats were achieved is because we were one nation working together. Obama successfully incorporated rhetoric into his speech to make it exciting, believable and logical. His speech is a great representation of a well-written rhetorical essay.
