1.) Explain the major differences between Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism and discuss the advantages/disadvantages of each for the missionary expansion of Buddhism. Theravada is more conservative than Mahayana and Theravada believe it is closer to the original teachings of the Buddha. The major Theravada locations currently are Sri Lanka and the Southeast Asian nations of Burma. Theravada Buddhism believes that a person can only achieve enlightenment through their own efforts. Mahayana Buddhism believes that there are known as Bodhisattvas who help humans in life's struggles and answer necessary prayers. The Theravada Buddhist believes that Buddha was just a man who found enlightenment. Mahayana Buddhism believes that the Buddha was more than a man and was in fact a divine being. The Mahayana further explains that since Buddha was an eternal divine being who came to earth to help others, there must be many others who did the same. Theravada Buddhism holds to the original teachings, so they believe that the Buddha cared little or nothing about Gods and worship. The Mahayana believes that the Buddha was an eternal being, so they could focus on the many eternal Buddhas and worship them. The Mahayana, like the Hindus, are very accepting of other religions; therefore they believe that Jesus Christ was an incarnation of Buddha. The basic beliefs of Theravada are very different from those of Mahayana, which is fascinating since they both believe in the same thing. Many religions have cleavages on some issues that separate and alienate them from each other. Baptist churches could be compared to Theravada because they are very conservative and strict; and New Age churches could be compared to Mahayana because they are very accepting and forgiving. I personally believe that Mahayana Buddhists have a better view of the world, and therefore the world will have a better view than them. 2.)
