People would like to be able to believe that the statement "All men are created equal in our justice system" is true, but unfortunately this statement is not true in many different cases. Our justice system prejudices those who may be African American. Many cases are resolved that include discrimination against African Americans. Some examples of these cases would be the first, the Scottsboro Boys case, the second, the case of Emmet Till and Medgar Evers, the third, the Emmett Till case. The first case is the Scottsboro Boys. On March 25, 1931, 9 African American boys boarded a train along with 2 girls and a group of teenagers who, coincidentally, were Caucasian. A fight broke out between the two different groups of kids and eventually the group of white kids was thrown off the train. On March 31, all 9 boys were accused of gang rape. All 9 boys were tried but the jurors decided who their lawyers were and probably gave them the worst ones they could find. Clarence Norris and Charles Weems were the first two guys to be tried, their lawyers were a real estate agent from Tennessee with alcohol problems but no experience in criminal law and a 70 year old man who is a lawyer from Alabama who has no had a case in a couple of decades. 12 days after being arrested all but one of the boys were sentenced to death. Just like in the book “To Kill a Mockingbird,” a black boy was accused of raping a white girl. In those days the word of a white person was primarily the law and was far more important than the word of a black person. Ultimately it ends up being a white man's word on a black man and the white man will win every time. Not much has changed over the years with racism. WWW.Ebscohost.com Second is the case of Emmet......center of the article......he decided to be biased in any shape or form. People need to bring justice to Emmett Till, Trayvon Martin, Medgar Evers and the Scottsboro Boys and not let this court of injustice happen again. In conclusion, the statement “All men are created equal in our justice system” should be false in most past cases. The people of this country must change the ways of the courts so that they can finally say that the statement “All men are created equal in our justice system” is a true statement. People must do this for justice for those of the past and those of the future. For the same reasons as the first case of the Scottsboro Boys, the second case of Emmett Till and the third case of Trayvon Martin and Medgar Evers. For these reasons the statement “All men are created equal in our justice system” is not true. Works Cited www.ebsco.com www.naacp.org
