Dante the poet based his punishments on his medieval mentality. He believes that one should follow the standards and norms set by the authority unless the authority is corrupt. Violating standards is a sin because it creates chaos. Dante believes that some sins deserve more severe punishments. One way Dante determines the degree of punishment is by comparing the amount of chaos the person creates to that of other sinners. A person who sins more and creates more chaos is punished more brutally than someone who has committed lesser sins. Dante would view violation of the dress code as a combination of fraud, violence, and incontinence; therefore those who violate the dress code should be sentenced to extremely severe punishment. Conformity requires that everyone be forced into certain behaviors so that there is order and peace. Dante believes that the angry must be punished because they have no control over their actions. Their wild and unstoppable behaviors disrupt society's orthodoxy because orthodoxy requires that everyone be forced to behave appropriately. Because the wrathful have no control over their tempers, they find themselves in the Fifth Circle of Hell, violently attacked while covered in a muddy ooze. They are brutally attacked by others: «They hit each other only with their hands, / but with their heads, with their chests and with their feet, / and they tore each other to pieces with their teeth» (7, 112-114). As they attack each other, they suffer further pain because their teeth are crooked: “Then the Florentine, mad with spleen, began to turn his teeth against himself” (8.61-3). In contemporary times, when there is no higher authority ruling over students, students may go against established customs, such as dress code... middle of paper... create social disunity and gather followers, just like Muhammad had gathered his followers. There will be a divide in the school between those who agree with the dress code policy and those who disagree. Therefore, dress code violators should also be cut down for causing schisms in their schools. The dress code is a fixed custom of the school; therefore violation of the dress code policy is a grave offense against Orthodoxy. When schools don't enforce the rules, students are left unrestricted and may act inappropriately. Violating the dress code can also be an act of impersonation, in which a student changes their appearance and identity to match someone else's, and an act of dissent. Therefore, violators of the dress code should suffer all the punishments of the Wrathful, the Falsifiers of the Person of Others and the Sowers of Scandals and Schisms..
