'Childhood is a social construct, a product of our collective imagination. Different advertisements and different films construct childhood in different ways' (Video 1 Band 3 pp.341-342). I intend to explain how children's different visual representations are influenced by the four childhood discourses. I will discuss the views and ideas of the three main philosophers of childhood discourse and the sociologist. The social constructionist approach distinguishes different discourses on childhood as a result of different cultures, beliefs, experiences and historical times. It suggests that the “child” and “childhood” exist only because adults have made them meaningful (Aries, 1962). The approach sees our understanding and knowledge as constructed through our childhood experiences. .” (Rogers, 2003, p.21) In the painting Beside the River by Agnes Gardener King (Book 1, p. 22) the girl portrays the romantic vision of childhood as an innocent and guiltless child. This approach is mainly observed in Victorian fine art and book illustrations. Like the girl in the painting, the romantic vision seeks the goodness of the child. The white dress, the girl, the braid and the lamb are symbols of innocence. The painting appears peaceful, the colors are calm; the girl walks slowly and smiles sweetly. This type of image was the main message of the romantic discourse on childhood. The concept was greatly influenced by the 18th century French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778), who wrote a book 'Emile' which became one of the most important textbooks of French...medium of paper.. ... .lieves.After reading the book U212 chapters 1 and 2 and seeing the video of 'Representation of childhood', I think that the childhood discourses that an adult sees in the child depend a lot on the gender of the young person. The puritanical discourse of childhood is usually represented by boys as mischievous, wicked children who need discipline. While girls are usually depicted in the romantic discourse of childhood, innocent and sinless. Films and advertisements show different discourses on childhood where sometimes it is the sexual or violent aspect that shocks us and makes us reflect. The way we see childhood depends a lot on our early experiences, our beliefs and our cultural upbringing. Two people looking at the same image, film or advertisement may see two different things. There is no common childhood, there are only similar childhood experiences.
