Tone is a major contributor to the "Hate Poem" work. “Tone is an aspect of point of view as it has a lot to do with the narrator. Tone is the narrator's predominant attitude toward the subject, be it a place, an event, a character, or an idea” (Writing Essays about Literature, Kelley Griffith page 46). Analyzing Julie Sheehan’s “Poem about Hate,” “To understand the tone of the poem, we must listen to the words, as we might listen to an actual conversation. The key is to listen not only to what is said but also how it is said.” (Kennedy and Gioia) His use of different styles of irony helps with the tone he is trying to convey. He uses the word hate when it has the ability to actually mean its opposite, love. It clearly makes a difference in what the speaker was saying and how people might react when those words were exchanged. He uses repetition of the words hate, you and mine which add emotion and emphasize his deepest personal feelings. Without his use of sarcasm this poem would have been good but not great. Her sarcastic words brought great attention to her poem and allowed her to convey her message that love and hate are such passionate emotions that are so closely connected and can weave into each other. The use of figurative language is one of the strongest qualities of the poem's tone. Without the passionate emotion depicted it would have lost some of its tone, and tone is what allows the speaker to affectively convey the meaning of the poem. “The poet Billy Collins said of her work: “Julie Sheehan has a range of tones—tender, sassy, quietly attentive, deeply cutting” (www.poetryfoundation.com). In an interview with Julie Sheehan, the interviewee h...... middle of paper ......ng hate with love wrote an extraordinary love poem that was extremely passionate and profound. This poem shows how every word in a poem is essential to how it is received by the audience. Works Cited Griffith, Kelley. "Chapter 3 Tone." Writing Essays on Literature: A Guide and Style Sheet.
