“Larger than life criminals are subject to cosmetic surgery” (Junge 30/10). They change their appearance to elude suspicion. Surgeries include, but are not limited to, liposuction, nose jobs, and fingerprint mutilation. Their goal is to create a new identity and they are obsessed with performing these surgeries. This can be seen in the case of Chupeta. He took cosmetic surgery too far because it was barely recognisable. Chupeta took these drastic measures following the murder of his partner and his right-hand man. He received several surgeries to change his appearance; each time he pushed himself further and further away from his original "model" look. In fact it was only recognized via voice recognition. This is an addiction, and Chupeta wasn't the only one to participate in the drastic change in his appearance. Riot gear can also be considered a form of addiction. “…beauty of the night in black armor…” (Taussig 61). These men perform destructive work in these beautiful uniforms further connecting beauty and violence. It could be argued that areas such as the kneecaps and uniform codpiece are more cosmetic than not
