This article will demonstrate how Aristotle thought the life based on moral virtue was part of the best human life and how his account was flawed. I will do this by first outlining what Aristotle defines as the life of moral virtue, then I will describe what he thinks is the best human life, then I will demonstrate how Aristotle thinks the life of moral virtue fits into the best human life. human life and I will conclude by establishing why Aristotle's premise is wrong. Aristotle's theory of moral virtue is that the main purpose of life is to achieve eudaimonia, the state of being happy. Eudaimonia is a position of being that includes fulfillment and success. To achieve eudaimonia, one must be able to function correctly in how they collectively think and act with their own sense of reason and their own natural understanding of moral virtues. 8 Aristotle outlines the soul as two parts, the rational part that controls thinking and reasoning and the irrational part obeys thinking and reasoning. 7Doing well in the irrational and rational part of the soul is what it means to be the best human being. 7 An example of this would be how morally virtuous actions require that an individual be able to choose how to respond to their own thoughts and feelings. Aristotle believes that every action is considered a quest to aim for something good. 1 The "Doctrine of the Average", is the center of the Aristotelian treatment of moral virtue, morally virtuous actions are what is found between the excess and the deficiency of a trait, neither too much nor too little, these actions are determined contextually and they are relative to you. 14 Aristotle describes two types of virtue, moral virtue, which is the ability to reason, and intellectual virtue, which is like knowing what...... middle of paper ......or one's advantage does not il for the benefit of others, for example using the principles of the doctrine of the mean, people tend to be attracted to the deficiency aspect of the scale. 14 The soul has a rational part that thinks and reasons and an irrational part that acts on that thought7, in following these ideals, doing well is both the irrational and rational part of the soul means excelling in the human being according to Aristotle. 7 In reality, most people follow the irrational part of the soul. They are guided by their desires rather than thinking about it first. By doing so, people would not end up living happily, according to Aristotle, thus distancing them from the best possible life. This shows that although moral virtue is an important part of what brings someone happiness, it is not the only reason people can live happy lives..
