The market revolution transformed various aspects of American society thanks to the development of new inventions, ideologies and lifestyles. From 1790 to 1840, improved national transportation methods, the commercialization of the American market system, and the onset of industrialization fostered the market revolution and influenced the country economically, socially, and even religiously. The Industrial Revolution occurred in Western European countries such as France, England, and Germany starting in the 1760s and completely altered the European marketplace, workplace, and society as technological inventions and ideas spread to the United States . In 1791, Alexander Hamilton expressed “the necessity of enlarging the sphere of our home commerce”1 and thus supported and financed American industries. With the help of the government, the Market Revolution first initiated market expansion by connecting distant communities, such as western cities with coastal cities, through infrastructure advances. This would cause a shift from local and regional markets to national and international markets abroad. The market revolution changed aspects of American life such as work, transportation, commercialization, family life, the new values produced by evangelical religion, sentimentalism and transcendentalism, and the birth of the new middle class from 1790 to 1840. The Pre-industrial work consisted mainly of livestock and agriculture involving the entire family. In 1823, 97% of all Americans still lived on farms, so the rural population and workforce far outnumbered the urban population and workforce. American entrepreneurs with new technologies created a completely different economy that shaped and influenced all other aspects of society. The market revolution has gradually moved society from a rural agricultural lifestyle to the focus of work in urban cities as it is today. While in 1800 the vast majority of American citizens participated in agriculture and ranching, in 2013 the percentage of farmers who worked is less than 1%: this is the lasting effect of the Market Revolution.
