"There is a way to be good again." By placing this quote at the beginning of the book, "The Kite Runner", Khaled Hosseini introduced a theme that runs throughout the story of the book, redemption. Everything has a path that leads to the final destination, sometimes there are more than one road to take. It is up to people to choose which one is suitable for them. In the book, by telling the story, the author has indicated a path towards redemption. Baba, Sanaubar and Amir, the different characters in the book represent different types of people in reality, stories of how they would go about redeeming their mistakes. Redemption, the definition of this term is a controversial topic. Through the book, the author shows his understanding side of the word. Redemption is an act of kindness from a repentant heart, from the guilt of the past. A person who had previously made a mistake would be slowly eaten away by his remorse and the pain that haunts him day after day. However, "there is a way to be good again", he may have killed one life, but he can save another to repay the sin. This is simply how redemption works. People could not change the past; therefore, they would do a good thing that leads to a better future, that makes them become better people than those of the past. The road to redemption does not begin when the person makes up for his guilt, but begins when he feels repentant, a difficult beginning, and ends with the relief of redemption. The author places characters in different sinful situations and how they try to solve problems, as examples for his ideas on the road to redemption. For example, Baba is always an honorable man in the eyes of people. They admire him for his power, are jealous of his wealth, and love... middle of paper... guilt in people. It is useless to do thousands of good things in the present when you have failed to change a sin in the past. Redemption can be thought of as a comfort, giving people "illusion," the feeling of believing they can repay their sins. However, this is not true; what has been done cannot be reversed again. For example, Amir may have saved Sohrab's life by saving the boy from Assef, but that's what he does for Sohrab, not Hassan. His half-brother had been raped by Assef anyway, had been shot and was already dead. That truth is immutable. In fact, redemption is an action that can be a kind of selfishness because most redemption is about sinners trying to make themselves feel better. Therefore, the author's statement about redemption, "there is a way to be good again", is not always true.
