A family assessment is a process of gathering and organizing information to help a family prevent and/or resolve problems. The goal is to gain a full understanding and unbiased view of strengths and problems. Good assessment is about building relationships, engaging families in exploring their strengths, values and goals to build mutual trust and respect. Then, when problems arise, this relationship can be the foundation of open communication that opens doors for identifying additional supports needed to reduce or eliminate the factors causing harm. The family discussed in this article is a traditional nuclear family. The family composition of this household consists of a 28-year-old mother (MD) and a 26-year-old father (KD) in a monogamous marriage with four children (DD, MD, ED and BD), whose ages are 7, 6, 5 and 18 months respectively, two dogs and a cat. The father and mother are the biological parents of the children. Both father and mother act as breadwinners and decision makers. The father KD is employed full time as a farm laborer and is an entrepreneur who runs a business called "The Flea Market". His main role for the company is purchasing and pricing products. The CD mother is the main breadwinner for the family as she works as a full-time CMA. CD works part-time and his main role in the company is customer relations, marketing and accounting. The children are all about a year apart and have close bonds due to their short age difference. The eldest child DD quite often takes responsibility for the child of the BD family and is often noticed helping him at the dinner table or with his household chores when no one is paying attention.
