Do androids dream of electric sheep? and Brave New World are set in dystopian futures. Technological advances have been beneficial to society, but at the expense of the humanity of citizens. In Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Rick Deckard is a bounty hunter who kills androids who have escaped from colonies on other worlds. The Rosen Corporation creates androids to mimic humans to the point that it is difficult to distinguish between the two. In Brave New World, the World State is responsible for genetically engineering humans. These “humans” have none of the characteristics of a modern human being. Human beings are emotional creatures. People in the World State have no emotions, unlike in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, where the only distinguishing characteristic between humans and androids is human empathy. Technology is used to alter emotions in both dystopian worlds to the point where neither person is authentic. In Brave New World, people are artificially created to be like machines for the benefit of society, while in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, both androids and humans have a presence and lack of humanity. A person cannot be considered human if his thoughts are controlled by someone else. In Brave New World, children are conditioned to believe what the world state wants them to believe. A technological advance, known as hypnopaedia, can be used for moral teaching. During a child's sleep, an incessant voice tells the child to follow behaviors that are beneficial to society. Hypnopedia, for example, can tell the motto of the world state, “Community, Identity, Stability” (Huxley 1). In Brave New World, a person no longer has free will because they have been implanted with ideas about how to live. In Do androids Dream of Electri... in the center of the card... there are devices that can create human-like beings, ways to make them feel, and ways to alter their moods. Part of being human is the ability to feel emotions, but both societies have completely artificial emotions for both humans and androids. In the World State people don't care about each other because technology prevents them from feeling authentic emotions. In Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, a human is defined as someone who possesses empathy. This is a trait shared by both humans and androids. It is Dick's opinion that humans and androids are essentially the same. The fact that the distinction between Android is increasingly blurred shows that humans are becoming more and more artificial. In the World State, humans are vaunted as a scientific experiment. The people in Brave New World also became machine-like. As technology has taken over nature, there are no natural humans.
