The industrial revolution created the new working class. Compared to the lives of wealthy and middle-class people, the living conditions of industrial workers seemed extravagant. They were crammed into tenements, or multi-story buildings divided into tiny rooms, without running water, sewerage or clean drinking water. Their waste was dumped in the streets and rivers. In addition to these harsh conditions, the sanitation system in these tenements was extremely poor, causing the spread of diseases, such as cholera. Although their living conditions were poor, they paled in comparison to those working in the factories. The working class was made up of farmers who abandoned their rural lifestyle for industrial cities and job opportunities. Compared to their previous lifestyle, life in the factories was harsh and workers had to work up to sixteen hours six or seven days a week for low wages. Workers only got breaks when factory owners let them, and most factory owners were social Darwinists or rugged individualists who didn't care about their workers. The long hours resulted in worker exhaustion which led to maiming accidents as people accidentally lost parts of their bodies to the machines. In addition to being maimed, many workers developed lung diseases from long hours spent inhaling lint in the factory's unventilated air, and workers with physical conditions were fired.
