Topic > Summary of the desire to feed Popenoe - 1613

What is the real purpose of fattening in these societies? Popenoe, when she asked Azawagh Arab women why they got fat, received three particular answers: “(1) because it is beautiful; (2) because men like it; or, less commonly, (3) because it turns a girl into a woman” (2004: 48). For women, no matter where they are, beauty is something that is always desired, so Azawagh Arab women's desire to be beautiful makes sense. The desire to be attractive to men is very important, since this is what the pillars of this society rest on. The Azawagh Arabs are obviously faithful followers of Allah, faithful Muslims and therefore more or less follow the Quran, the Muslim version of the Bible. One of the most important things noted in the Quran includes the possibility of having more than one wife, where you must love all your wives equally, and most importantly, the need for a wife to please her husband and vice versa.
