Topic > Uniforms: Road To Congress - 774

Your phone rings and it's the school your child attends. They're calling to tell you that your son got into a fight again about the clothes he was wearing. He is suspended for 3 days and misses his education. And to think that all of this could be avoided if the school required uniforms. High schools obviously should enforce uniforms. There are three reasons. For one thing, it reduces bullying. It also relieves stress for students and parents. Finally, it gives scholars a sense of responsibility and discipline. Many high schools today, both public and private, require students to wear uniforms. However, I think all high schools should require uniforms for students immediately. Bullying is one of the biggest problems in schools and one of the biggest causes is the clothes the victim wears. It's as easy as wearing a no-name brand shoe to be chosenWood 1on. All these kids buy new clothes because they are being bullied. They should focus more on academics rather than the latest trends. A study at Oxford Brockes University attests to how uniforms reduce bullying. In the study, the teenagers said, the uniforms acted as a social leveler and reduced bullying. Uniforms make students economically equal. With uniforms, students from poor families dress like students from rich families. This prevents envy and jealousy of their elegant clothes. The youth also admitted that they were less likely to misbehave anywhere because their uniform identified that school (Clark 1). Professor Margaret Hams, who led the study at Oxford, said: “Uniforms often contribute directly to the reduction of bullying.” So why shouldn't uniforms already be mandatory? Another big plus…the medium of paper…uniforms take away creativity is just illogical and ignorant. So next time you can get your school a uniform, you'd better get it. Likewise, we should also go to the congress on this issue. High schools should require uniform. Not having a uniform is like taking away your child's education! Would you like your child to be deprived of his education? Works Cited Cruz, Barbara. School dress codes: a pro/con question (hot pro/con issues). New Jersey: EnslowPublisher, 2001.
