Transcendentalism was a philosophy with a strong effect on the literature of the 1830s and 1840s. Transcendentalism advocated views that involved isolation from society and connection with nature. However, transcendentalist writers such as Emerson and Thoreau were not the first to use these ideas. Thomas Paine, a well-known revolutionary hero, is an originator of transcendentalist ideals. Although his views were not exactly those of modern Transcendentalists, Thomas Paine generated very similar ideas to advance his revolutionary ideas. This new writing style was integral to the reason for the popularity and success of his writing, giving him a place in American history. Thomas Paine used early elements of Transcendentalism to express his belief in and support for human and social rights. Thomas Paine began his life as a common man, but became a distinguished writer and a devoted patriot. The son of a corset maker, Paine was more influenced by his father's religion than by his work. His father's religious influence, combined with his scientific studies, made him dislike rule based on hereditary privilege. Eventually, Paine immigrated to Philadelphia, obtained more education, and met many advocates for political change (Foner 1). Paine's success had two origins. The first, and best known, was his sympathy for America's plight. Paine did not like the monarchy like many other Americans. Secondly, his transcendentalist writing style made his writings quite unique, making them even more interesting to his readers. Paine died poor and alone after many of his views were considered too radical. Age of Reason demonstrated that, despite the passage of time, Paine continues to hold transcendentalist ideals and beliefs, while using these beliefs to advocate for the rights of man and society, as well as freedom from oppression. Thomas Paine was not the perfect example of transcendentalism. . However, this is due to the fact that he came almost 50 years before the movement and most likely had a great influence on its origin. He still used the finer elements to create well-reasoned moral, ethical and realistic arguments for freedom and revolution for the benefit of society and individuals. These views themselves are transcendentalist in nature. Thomas Paine's work continued to inspire men throughout the Revolution, causing him to be cited as a major influence on freedom throughout the ages.
