Has a story ever made a reader want to hurt the character responsible for the problems caused? Obviously; usually the antagonist is often annoyance. Richard Connell creates these instigative characters with pleasure and diversity. In his story "The Most Dangerous Game", he creates General Zaroff to be easy to hold a grudge against. Similarly, Edgar Allan Poe creates a character who is easy to hate. In his short story "The Cask of Amontillado", Poe creates a murderous mind. Connell's antagonist, General Zaroff, and Poe's antagonist, Montresor, invite the reader to hate them. These two characters are similar but different in their evil personalities, wealth and defiance. In "The Most Dangerous Game", Connell portrays several examples in the text that indicate that Zaroff is truly evil. Near the beginning of the story Connell writes, "I want to show you my new collection of heads. Will you come with me to the library?"” (76).
