INTRODUCTION The film version of Rita Heyworth and Stephen King's The Shawshank Redemption: The Shawshank Redemption, directed by Frank Darabont, carries many different themes that connect emotionally, for example Redemption, Innocence, dehumanization. While these themes are quite thought-provoking and thought-provoking, perhaps one of the most significant themes of this film is its consistent portrayal of the idea of institutionalism. Darabont explores the perspective that, being so accustomed to the situation within an intuition, inmates are unable to reassimilate to normal life in society once released from prison. This theme is highlighted in the film through some characters, in particular: Brooks Hatlen, Tommy and of course the inseparable duo Ellis 'Red' Redding and Andy Dufresne. All of these characters at times show the meaning and understanding of the term institutionalism and how it can have different effects on different people with different moods and personalities. BROOKS HATLEN Brooks Hatlen is a clear example of institutionalism in the film. After a long sentence in Shawshank Prison, Brooks is released on bail and transferred to a local town. He then starts working at the local supermarket while staying in a hostel. During his time in prison, Brooks was able to occupy himself by managing the almost non-existent prison library. When Andy is assigned to the library, Brooks displays a deep understanding of how the library works. He also reintroduces Andy to a young tower bird he named Jake. Andy's first contact with Jake was in the cafeteria where Brooks fed young Jake from a pocket in his jacket. This scene demonstrates Brooks' extended tour of duty at Shawshank and how his... middle of paper... rough way of prison life has made him believe that a life of crime is the only way forward in life.CONCLUSIONFrank Darabont and the cast and crew of The Shawshank Redemption represent the idea of institutionalization, through their portrayal of Rita Heyworth and The Shawshank Redemption. They describe how an inmate can become so comfortable with prison life and prison living circumstances across the streams that he can become irrational and possibly suicidal. Through Tommy Darabont describes how, even when the obvious play is about his desire to reassimilate into normal life, institutionalization can hinder and perhaps counterproductive progress represented by Tommy's lack of self-confidence. The Shawshank Redemption is a perfect representation of the idea of institutionalism and Frank Darabont has depicted this theme quite substantially.
